Frequently Asked Questions

What is non-certified or reject OSB and how does it compare to “on-grade” OSB?

On-grade, or certified, OSB is manufactured to certain specifications to allow it to be used in construction where building codes require a certain amount of weight to be held (roofs, exterior walls, etc.)
The OSB mills we work with make tens of thousands of sheets a day of OSB.  Sometimes they change their formulations, or have small manufacturing issues that mean some of the material doesn’t meet their strict requirements.  That material is stamped “non-certified” or “reject” and it cannot be used for structural construction that requires a permit.
What are the issues?  Sometimes there is some delamination in the material.  Or perhaps the material won’t pass the density scan testing at the factory because of voids in some of the sheets.  For most non-structural applications, the material is perfectly fine and the price cannot be beat.

Why do the sizes of the OSB seem a bit different?

In the same way that a 2x4 piece of wood isn’t 2 inches by 4 inches, OSB sizing can sound a bit funny because of the manufacturing process.
For most people, a 23/32” sheet of OSB is essentially equivalent to ¾”. In the same way, what many would call a 1/2” sheet of OSB can be just slightly thinner and called 15/32” or 7/16.
While 4 feet by 8 feet is a pretty standard width and length, we supply (depending on availability) many different dimensions of OSB such as:
• 4 x 12
• 4 x 9
• 4 x 4
• 4 ½ x 9

Why does Evans Tedham have access to these products when other lumber yards don’t?

Evans Tedham has been buying non-certified and reject OSB by the truckload for over 20 years.  Our main application is to supply manufacturers like furniture factories (who cut it up and use it for couches and chairs for the big retail stores).
Over time, many other customers have developed uses for the product, and in the process saved themselves hundreds of dollars or more

What are some applications of non-certified or reject OSB?

Our customers use this material in a wide variety of applications
• concrete contractors use it for shoring
• farmers use it for barn interiors and stalls
• goat and chicken hobby farmers use it for making pens for the animals
• Backyard hockey rink boards
• Lining the interior (not exterior, because that’s structural) walls of a garage after insulating
